Did you know the number of obese children more than tripled within the last 30 years? Even more troubling, a 2010 study by the World Health Organization found that over 40 million children less than five years old are overweight. These figures are disturbing, and need to be addressed.
It goes without saying. You love your children, so one of the best things you can do for them is make sure they stay physically and emotionally healthy. An alarming number of children are at risk for serious health conditions, and even more are threatened by low self esteem and depression. What can you do?
Encourage Outdoor Activities
Instead of buying your child the latest PlayStation, opt instead for an outdoor swing set. Public playgrounds have been popular since the beginning of the 19th Century, when the Outdoor Recreate League provided them for low income areas. Still going to the public playground requires a trip, and it may not be feasible for you to make that trip every day.
Eliminate the need to spend gas money and take time out of your day with personal, wooden swingsets. Playset installation costs are relatively low, and even more cost effective when you take into account that you will reduce the risk of your child having joint and bone problems, sleep issues, and poor self esteem. A study predicts that as many as a third of children born in 2000 and beyond will get diabetes, a number that can be greatly reduced if parents take steps to prevent childhood obesity.
Whether you buy your child a swing set, basketball hoop, or trampoline, the important thing is to replace that indoor gaming system. Playset installation costs are more than worth it, especially when it comes to your child and his or her long term health. Outdoor activities help curb childhood obesity and, left unchecked, the epidemic can leave your child sluggish, unhealthy, and unhappy.

Not a bad suggestion at all. I still love trampolines. They can be a little treacherous though, so just make sure you follow basic safety tips and, whenever possible, keep little ones on the trampoline with little ones and let the big kids have the next turn.
agreed! this is much more sensible advice than some of the other attempts at conquering childhood obesity. I mean, “healthy” kids meals, really? we should be eating out less, not replacing fast food with healthier alternatives.
